Almost 100 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth from across Far North Queensland will take part in a PBR Australia x Deadly Choices clinic in Cairns on Friday, ahead of the 2025 Monster Energy Cairns Invitational.
The clinic will offer a behind-the-scenes experience at a professional bull riding event, giving the young participants insight into PBR careers, from bull riding and protection athletes to event production and music.
Mununjali man and Deadly Choices Head of Operations, Corey Kirk, said the event is about inspiring youth to become strong role models in their communities.
"This is an exciting event for us at Deadly Choices, and it's the second year partnering with PBR," he said.
"Through our programs the kids learn about being strong role models and leaders in their community.
"The kids take what they learn back to their communities, and it empowers them to continue to make healthy choices."
All participating youth have completed a 715 Health Check, maintained high school attendance, and finished the Deadly Choices Healthy Lifestyle Education program.
They will wear the PBR x Deadly Choices health check shirt, available through participating Community Controlled Health Services.
PBR Australia Managing Director Glen Young said the clinic gives young people a rare opportunity to see the scale of professional bull riding events.
"PBR's partnership with Deadly Choices gives young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children the chance of a lifetime to see the innerworkings of a PBR (Professional Bull Riders) event up close, and to meet our riders, and experience the large variety of jobs required to set up such a large-scale event," he said.
"We are always looking to give opportunities to kids who may not necessarily have access to the same opportunities as those who live in metro areas.
"The work Deadly Choices does to ensure ongoing support for health literacy among young kids is fantastic."
The clinic will be led by seven-time World Champion qualifier Lachie Richardson and 13-time titled Protection Athlete Jared Borghero.
PBR resident singer Hayley Jensen will also speak on turning stories into music.
The following day, the Cairns Convention Centre will host the Monster Energy Cairns Invitational, featuring top riders from across Australia, Brazil and New Zealand who will compete for more than $40,000 in prize money.
Mr Young said with the season entering its final stages, every ride and every second will be critical.
Top-ranked riders include current leader, Mareeba's Kurt Shephard, the 2025 Cowboy of Origin, Brazil's Luan Camara, and highest scorer in Origin III, Athol's Zane Hall.
Also riding are Sam Woodall from Victoria, Beau Willis from Bowen, and international names such as Diego Galdino, Alison Aguiar, Joao Rigaard Franco, and New Zealand's Rylee Ward, Darryl McPherson and Koby Parsons.
Six elite bull contractors will bring top stock, including Alpha Blokes Warden, an unridden bull with five High Point Bull titles this season.
