Voting has commenced for the Mulka by-election.
The by-election was sparked by the resignation of Yiŋiya Mark Guyula on August 19 in protest at the CLP Territory Government's policies, which he described as "contributing to the breakdown of our culture and people, in what is now becoming a slow genocide".
Mr Guyula's resignation sparked a wave of statements from Indigenous leaders and organisations, thanking him for his work and largely echoing his statements regarding the NT Government.
The candidates for the Mulka by-election are independent Andrew Blamey, and Labor's Yiwarr McGrath, a Yolŋu man.
Early voting is available at the following locations:
Nhulunbuy Town Hall - 87 Chesterfield Circuit, Nhulunbuy
- Monday 31 August to Friday 4 September: 8am to 5pm
- Saturday 5 September: 9am to 2pm
- Monday 7 September to Thursday 10 September: 8am to 5pm
- Friday 11 September: 8am to 6pm
NT Electoral Commission - Level 3, TCG Centre, 80 Mitchell Street, Darwin
- Monday 31 August to Friday 11 September: 8.30am to 4pm (Closed Saturday and Sunday.)
The NT Electoral Commission's mobile voting team is travelling to communities across Mulka throughout the voting period to conduct voting services.
Postal vote applications remain open, applications close at the following times:
- Overseas postal vote applications – 5pm on Tuesday 8 September
- Local postal vote applications – 5pm on Thursday 10 September
Election day for the Mulka by-election is Saturday 12 September.
Voting will be available from 8am to 6pm at Nhulunbuy Town Hall
The NT Electoral Commissioner, Kirsten Kelly, is reminding electors to make sure their vote counts in the Mulka by-election.
"I encourage Mulka electors to plan where and when they will vote to ensure they have their say on who represents their community in the Northern Territory Parliament," said Ms Kelly.
Voting in the Mulka by-election is compulsory.
