Territory Labor has pre-selected Yolŋu man, Yiwarr McGrath, as its candidate for the seat of Mulka.

In an announcement on Tuesday, Labor described Mr McGrath, 35, as "a well-respected, award-winning registered nurse and health researcher" from Galiwin'ku, and "a strong advocate for his community".

Mr McGrath, who won the 2021 NT Young Australian of the Year, is a father of three and "holds the local community at the heart of everything he does", the announcement said.

"It's an honour to have been pre-selected, and I look forward to campaigning to continue the incredible legacy of Yingiya Guyula," Mr McGrath said.

"Mulka is my home, and I want to fight for it. Healthcare is my profession, and I want to see it thrive in our area. Nhulunbuy and the remote communities and homelands deserve the same dignity of access to healthcare as any other Territorian.

"It's a short campaign, but I'm ready to get out there and fight to become part of the Labor opposition and hold the divisive CLP Government to account."

Labor noted that the former Member for Mulka, Mr Guyula, upon resigning from parliament, labelled the Country Liberal NT government's actions as "dehumanising, oppressive and destroying our communities" and claimed they "are not willing to listen or form partnerships".

The party said Mr McGrath's love of East Arnhem Land and passion for health services "stands in stark contrast" to the CLP Government "which has abandoned the region", adding he is "ready to take up the fight to the CLP"and "work to deliver a strong, positive future for the region".

"He will hold the NT and Commonwealth Governments accountable for their investments, and make sure East Arnhem Land gets the support it deserves."

Opposition Leader Selena Uibo said Mr McGrath "can see the damage the CLP are doing, including their cuts to housing and their disrespectful and divisive behaviour".

"He is a local who lives and works in East Arnhem Land and has family from Nhulunbuy

and across the region - he understands and loves this electorate," she said.

"Yiwarr will fight for better services. He'll take that message to Darwin as the next member for Mulka and continue the important work of Yingiya Guyula."

Labor said Mr McGrath's ability to walk in both the Balanda and Yolŋu worlds - something for which Mr Guyula was well known - is key to representing the Mulka electorate and the town of Nhulunbuy.

"Yiwarr wants to continue the important work of Yingiya on Yolngu-led decision making," the announcement said.

"As the first Yolŋu registered nurse, he understands that decisions in East Arnhem Land cannot happen without Yolngu people at the table."

The candidacy announcement noted East Arnhem Land is going through an "immense" period of change, "transitioning to a post-mining future and facing many of the structural challenges that come with it".

"The people of Mulka need another strong local voice in NT Parliament to help stand up for the entire community and fight for housing, infrastructure, community safety, investment and public services like health and education."
