An Indigenous-led health initiative is now operating at Laidley Hospital, offering culturally safe care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Lockyer Valley.

The program, Murrumba Targan Djimbulung - meaning "good healing my people" in local traditional languages - was launched in 2024 by West Moreton Health to support people living with or at risk of chronic conditions such as diabetes, and heart and lung disease.

It provides home visits, telehealth consultations and access to the Deadly Steps Together Gym program.

The team is now running a monthly drop-in clinic at Laidley Hospital, located on Jagera, Yuggera and Ugarapul land.

Murrumba Targan Djimbulung Nurse Manager, Emily Lis, said the clinic brings services closer to home.

"We already do home visits in the area," Ms Lis said.

"The new clinic offers another way to connect with local people.

"It will bring together our team in the one place to have a yarn and walk with you on your health journey."

The team includes nurses, health workers, an exercise physiologist and a social worker.

Ms Lis encouraged those seeking support with long-term health conditions to get in touch.

"The program is a First Nations-led program, for First Nations people," she said.

"We take the time to get to know people and, together, create a health program tailored just for them."

To join, participants must be 18 years or older, identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, live in the West Moreton region, and have or be at risk of a chronic health condition.

The drop-in clinic runs on the last Wednesday of every month from 10am to 1pm at Laidley Hospital.

No GP referral is required.

To connect with the team, call 3447 2717 or email [email protected].
