Samoan Olympic sailor, Vaimo'oi'a Ripley, recently competed at the 2025 Oceania and Australian Open and Youth Championships at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) in Brisbane, Australia.
Ripley represented Samoa in the ILCA 6 class, finishing 4th in the silver fleet and 47th overall out of 85 competitors.
The performance followed her debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where Ripley navigating 12 races under varying weather conditions, ranging from strong south-easterly winds to lighter tactical breezes.
"Competing here has been an incredible experience," she said.
"Every race reminds me of why I sail – to represent Samoa, connect with the Pacific community, and inspire others to chase their dreams.
"I give thanks to the Lord Almighty for His continual protection and guidance. I am also deeply grateful to my sponsors and family for making this journey possible."
Her participation was supported by Vaikobi, NB Sail Sports, Woollahra Sailing Club, Middle Harbour Amateur Sailing Club, the Meredith-Evans family, and friends.
She also acknowledged the support of Fiji's sailing team, whose coach provided assistance during the regatta.
The event included daily coaching sessions led by ILCA coach Dan Blight, offering guidance on tactics, race management, and strategy.
"The coaching was appreciated," Ripley said.
"It helped me approach each race with local knowledge and confidence."
The 2025 championships marked another step for Pacific Island representation in competitive sailing.
Last year, Samoa was the only Pacific Island nation represented, and Ripley's continued participation highlights the region's growing presence in the sport.
Looking ahead, Ripley is preparing for future competitions, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Ripley is Samoa's first female Olympic sailor.
