Adelaide University has appointed Adam Goodes as the institution's inaugural First Nations Ambassador.
Professor Nicola Phillips Vice Chancellor announced the appointment on Thursday, and said it reflects the university's "commitment to building genuine partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and supporting First Nations education and student success".
"As Australia's first university to have an Aboriginal name - Tirkangkaku, meaning Place of Learning - written into its founding legislation, Adelaide University carries a responsibility to ensure First Nations knowledge, voices and leadership help shape our future," Professor Phillips said.
Mr Goodes, a proud Adnyamathanha and Narungga man, is widely recognised for his leadership, advocacy and lifelong commitment to creating opportunities for young First Nations people through education, including through the GO Foundation.
Mr Goodes was a champion footballer at the Sydney Swans, winning two AFL premierships and two Brownlow medals over the course of his remarkable career.
Professor Phillips said Mr Goodes will "help strengthen connections between the University and First Nations communities, champion participation in education and help ensure First Nations voices help shape the future of Adelaide University".
"We are proud to welcome Adam to Adelaide University and look forward to sharing more about his work with our community in the months ahead," she said.
