Indigenous boxing legend Tony Mundine has died aged 75.

Mr Mundine, the father of rugby league and boxing star Anthony Mundine, was the first Australian to fight in four different weight divisions.

Anthony Mundine, returning to Australia from Saudi Arabia, confirmed the sad news in a statement on social media.

"I don't know what to say, I'm broken," he wrote.

"Dad, I love you man, may Allah bless your soul. I'm on my way home to say goodbye one last time till we meet again.

"Thanks for doing all you did for me and supporting me in every moment, showing love and strength gonna miss you Tonza, there's only one Tony Mundine."

Across an extraordinary career in the middleweight, light-heavyweight, cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions, the late Mr Mundine recorded 80 wins - 64 from knockouts, 15 losses, and one draw.

He held Australian titles in all four divisions, and in 1974 fought Argentina's Carlos Monzon for the World Boxing Association's middleweight title but lost in the seventh round due to a stoppage.

Mr Mundine's last professional bout was against Alex Sua in 1984, with a defeat by points decision.

He was a tireless supporter of his son Anthony, and a key member of his team once the younger Mundine took a leap of faith from league to boxing.

Tony's grandson Rahim 'CJ' Mundine is also a boxer and currently has a 4-0 record.

Danny Green, who had a storied rivalry in the ring with Anthony Mundine, paid tribute to the man he described as "the legendary Tony Mundine".

"Grew up watching him on TV Ringside, drew a great deal of inspiration from watching him, one of my late father's favourite fighters," Mr Green wrote on social media.

"A gentleman that I had a tonne of respect for and we would always chew the fat when we saw each other.

"Thoughts are with the Mundine family. Thank you for the memories champ."

Nine News reports George Kambosos Jr described Mr Mundine's passing as a "sad day in Australian sport".

"Rest in peace to an absolute Australian boxing legend, Tony Mundine," Mr Kambosos said.

"A sad day in Australian sport, some great memories at the old Eveleigh Street boxing gym in Redfern sparring Choc with Tony always in his corner.

"A great man. My condolences to Anthony and the whole Mundine family."
