Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation (MHAC) has announced the commencement of Dr Richard Zanner as its chief executive officer.

Dr Zanner is an executive leader, adviser and educator with more than 25 years' experience across government, non-government and private sectors in Australia and overseas.

His career has spanned healthcare, education, justice and community services, with work focused on organisational performance and capability building.

He holds a PhD from Monash University and has published academic work while helping establish Centres of Excellence focused on leadership, best practice, research and training.

Dr Zanner said he was drawn to the role by Miwatj's approach to health.

"I was drawn to lead Miwatj Health because of its commitment to a shared approach to health that brings Yolŋu and Balanda together," he said.

"By working in partnership, we can strengthen preventative health and support communities to stay well.

"Through this collaboration, MHAC is creating meaningful, lasting improvements in health outcomes, and I'm proud to be part of that journey."

Dr Zanner is also recognised for his work in sustainable development frameworks covering social, economic and environmental outcomes.

His career in the Northern Territory began in 2009 in Central Australia.

From 2021, Dr Zanner served as chief executive officer of Northern Territory General Practice Education, where he led the organisation through its transition to a national college model of medical education.

Board chair Jo-Anne Bayalawuy Thorne of the Galiwin'ku community (North East Arnhem Land) said the organisation welcomed the appointment.

"On behalf of the Board, we are very pleased to welcome Dr Richard Zanner as Chief Executive Officer of Miwatj Health," Ms Bayalawuy Thorne said.

"Dr Zanner brings more than 25 years' experience across healthcare, education and community services, along with a strong track record in organisational leadership and capability building.

"His depth of expertise, combined with his understanding of the Northern Territory, positions him well to lead Miwatj Health into its next phase."

Ms Bayalawuy said Dr Zanner's approach aligned with Miwatj's priorities.

"Dr Zanner's commitment to partnership and his respect for community-led, preventative approaches to health align strongly with Miwatj Health's vision and values," Ms Bayalawuy Thorne said.

"The Board is confident his leadership will continue to strengthen our work with Yolŋu communities and partners across the region, ensuring we deliver sustainable, culturally appropriate care that supports long-term health and wellbeing."

Dr Zanner said he is looking forward to meeting with partners in the coming months and continuing collaborative work across the Miwatj region.
