Radical Son has released his latest single Yuluwirri Wandabaa (The Rainbow Dreaming), featuring Emma Donovan and Frank Yamma, ahead of his upcoming album Bilambiyal (The Learning), set for release on July 11.
The track, a celebration of ceremony and culture, showcases Gamilaroi and Tongan artist Radical Son's powerful storytelling and dynamic delivery.
Radical Son, born to an Aboriginal mother and Tongan father, channels his past experiences into his music, marked by hip hop urgency and soulful emotion.
Joined by Gumbaynggirr-Yamatji singer-songwriter Emma Donovan and Pitjantjatjara artist Frank Yamma, Radical Son's vocals lead a composition that blends percussion and vibrant ambience to highlight its thematic depth.
The single marks a significant collaboration among the three esteemed artists from the Wantok Musik stable, highlighting their collective prowess in an evocative and memorable musical offering.
"Emma, Frank and I recorded separately... I was really sick the week I had flown to Melbourne to record," Radical Son said.
"The recording sessions were long days and one of the guys had to pump me up full of medicines to get me through the those days.
"I don't know how we did it - but it came out sounding pretty good."
Radical Son collaborated with Marcus Longfoot and David Bridie to write "Yuluwirri Wandabaa (The Rainbow Dreaming)," enriching the track with contributions from Mitch McGregor on percussion, Phil Wales on guitar, and programming by Longfoot and Andrew Robinson.
Known for his advocacy for culture and connection in contemporary times, Radical Son infuses his latest creation with heartfelt passion.
"I absolutely love this song. A song about ceremony and culture," he said.
"There is so much depth in our Culture and Country...it provides the story and the way. It is there for us.
"The only thing is we don't see it as we are looking at the screens that stand between us."
This track joins recent singles Until You Call My Name and Elder, offering another glimpse into his upcoming album Bilambiyal (The Learning).
The album, releasung via his label Wantok Musik, showcases Radical Son's cultural connection, integrity, and perception across 12 tracks.
A festival favourite, he has performed at Bluesfest, St Kilda Festival, VIVID, the AFL Dreamtime game, and the official Archie Roach memorial.
Radical Son also has an upcoming show at QPAC on Wednesday July 31, where he will perform with Andrew Gurruwiwi Band, J-MILLA and Jungaji.
