Seventeen-year-old Southeast Sydney rapper TOKO NLZ has released his debut single 'Family Over Everything', becoming the first artist to release music through Kobie Dee's new label Twenny47 Records.
The deeply personal track explores grief, memory and the loss of his brother, while reflecting on the importance of family formed through both blood and relationships.
'Family Over Everything' was the first song TOKO NLZ ever wrote, initially putting the track together over 2Pac's 'Thugz Mansion'.
It was later rebuilt with young rapper and producer LANDZZ during their first studio session together at Twenny47 Studios in Maroubra.
TOKO NLZ described the debut as an introduction to both his music and the experiences behind it.
"Making this my first single is a great way to introduce the audience to my sound and for others to help understand me as an artist," TOKO NLZ said.
"It sets the tone for future releases and the relationship I want to build with my audience."
The release also marks the official launch of Twenny47 Records, a new imprint founded by Gomeroi rapper Kobie Dee and distributed in partnership with BAM.
The label has grown from Twenny47 Studios, a community space where Kobie Dee runs music, arts and cultural workshops for young people.
Kobie Dee first became aware of TOKO NLZ through other young people attending the studio, who encouraged him to listen to the emerging rapper.
"Nelz was the kid everyone was talking about when I first opened Twenny47 Studios," Kobie Dee said.
"A few of the youngers were talking about how good he is, so I said, 'Tell him to come through.'"
The track uses a soulful, boom-bap-influenced hip-hop sound, with TOKO NLZ using music to process loss and remember loved ones who have passed away.
TOKO NLZ arrived at the studio the following week and spent about an hour rapping over different beats and styles during a workshop.
Kobie Dee learned during the session that the young rapper was only 16 at the time and believed he had significant potential.
"I was instantly impressed. Then he told me he was only 16 and I was even more impressed," he said.
"I think he has the potential to be one of the best in the country."
'Family Over Everything' was also the first track TOKO NLZ recorded at Twenny47 Studios, where he began working with LANDZZ.
LANDZZ created the beat during the session before TOKO NLZ recorded the track, beginning a partnership that has since brought the pair back to the studio each week.
"LANDZZ, who is another young rapper/producer, had been in the studio as well. He made this beat instantly and Nelz was ready to lay the whole track," Kobie Dee said.
"This duo have been in the studio every single week ever since then. They are definitely ones to look out for and I'm just honoured to be able to help them on their journeys."
For TOKO NLZ, the debut establishes family, grief and his own experiences as central themes as he begins his recording career.
'Family Over Everything' is out now through Twenny47 Records.
