Alice Springs' Yipirinya School has announced the appointment of Shane Cumming as the school's interim principal, effective immediately.
A proud Aboriginal educator with strong cultural and community ties, Mr Cumming brings more than 25 year of education experience to the role, having worked in a variety of school education contexts.
They include teaching in remote Aboriginal community schools in the Kimberley region, as an Aboriginal education consultant to schools in the Desert region, and as a principal in large mainstream schools in regional centres of Western Australia.
With more than 10 years experience as a principal, Mr Cumming is also a founding member of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Principals Association.
The Yipirinya School Council management committee said it looks forward to working closely with Mr Cumming "to support strong learning, student wellbeing, and a safe school environment for all".
"Shane's appointment comes at an important time, and the Committee is confident he will bring steady leadership and clear communication to support our students," Yipirinya School said in a statement.
"His role will focus on strengthening learning across the school and ensuring it remains a safe, supportive environment where every child can thrive."
Mr Cumming's appointment comes after former Yipirinya School principal Gavin Morris was arrested for alleged physical assault on children.
Families and community members will be able to meet Mr Cumming at Yipirinya School's next Family Day on Wednesday, 19 June.
