An investigation is underway after an Indigenous man died at the Alice Springs Correctional Centre on Tuesday.

Northern Territory Police said at approximately 5:40pm they received reports that a 35-year-old male prisoner had collapsed.

"The Department of Corrections can confirm that an Aboriginal male prisoner has died following a medical emergency at Alice Springs Correctional Centre on Tuesday, 8 September 2026," a Territory Department of Corrections spokesperson said.

"Correctional staff immediately activated emergency response procedures and aided until medical personnel arrived. St John Ambulance and Northern Territory Police attended the scene, and the prisoner was transported to Alice Springs Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

"Support is being provided to prisoners and staff affected by the incident, including access to wellbeing and counselling services."

Police said initial investigations indicate the man died as a result of a medical episode.

The death has been reported to the Northern Territory Coroner, and it will be subject to a mandatory inquest as per standard practice.
