Nominations are now open for the Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program.
The program offers Indigenous youth in Queensland, aged 18–25, a chance to enhance their leadership skills and drive future opportunities in their communities.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the program has supported 720 young Indigenous leaders.
Kuku-Yalanji and Torres Strait (Erub and Darnley Islands) man Phillip Jose, 2023 program alumni, highlighted his desire for growth and the powerful experience of carrying his grandfather's name into parliament, symbolising a voice for his people where it was once denied.
"What attracted me to the program was my desire to learn and grow," he said.
"The most impactful moment was when I stepped into parliament and had the opportunity to carry my grandfather's name through those doors, in a powerful place where government once prayed on the downfall of my people.
"I was given the opportunity to speak and use my voice when my people were once not given this same opportunity."
Successful applicants will receive travel, meals, and accommodation, along with the opportunity to form lasting friendships and networks in a culturally safe and supportive community.
In making the announcement, the Queensland Government acknowledged the vital role of Indigenous people in fostering positive outcomes in First Nations communities and across the state.
Quandamooka woman and Minister for Treaty, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Communities and the Arts Leeanne Enoch, emphasised the importance of young people in communities today and the state's future, calling for passionate youth and emerging leaders to join the program.
"Young people are not just an important part of the state's future – but an important part of our communities today," Minister Enoch said.
"We are calling on passionate First Nations young people and emerging leaders who are focused on change and learning new skills, to join the 2024 Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program.
"This opportunity for self-development, leadership and professional skills will empower participants on their personal leadership journey."
The seven-day program will be held in Brisbane in November 2024.
Applications close on Friday 13 September, with more information available via the Queensland Government website.
