Townsville will mark 50 years of National NAIDOC with the launch of the Gurambilbarra NAIDOC Gala Awards Night later this year.

The event will recognise the contributions of First Nations people, organisations and businesses across the Townsville region as communities nationally celebrate five decades of NAIDOC.

Gurambilbarra is the Wulgurukaba Traditional Place Name for the Townsville region, with the awards focused on the achievements and stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people connected to the local community.

Community Themes Collective's Natasha Lane said the anniversary provided an opportunity to recognise generations of contribution.

"The 50th anniversary of National NAIDOC is a moment of reflection, pride and celebration," Ms Lane said.

"For generations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have shaped our communities through culture, leadership, resilience and service.

"The Gurambilbarra NAIDOC Gala Awards Night has been created to celebrate those stories, acknowledge those contributions and ensure the people making a difference in our community are recognised."

Awards will be presented across community leadership, business, education, health, sport, arts and culture, youth leadership, community service and lifetime contribution.

The event will also bring together Elders, families, organisations, businesses and supporters to recognise achievements and share stories from First Nations communities across the region.

Community Themes Collective is now calling for nominations of individuals, organisations and businesses whose work and achievements deserve recognition.

Ms Lane encouraged community members to nominate people making a contribution across Gurambilbarra.

"We all know someone who quietly goes above and beyond," she said.

"These awards belong to our community.

"They are an opportunity for all of us to recognise the people whose commitment, generosity and leadership continue to shape Gurambilbarra for the better."

Nominations close on Friday, September 11, with the Gurambilbarra NAIDOC Gala Awards Night to be held on Saturday, November 7.
