The Griffith University Art Museum is set to host the King & Wood Mallesons First Nations Art Award from September 14 to October 14.
This event is a biennial contest that promotes, displays, and honors the highest level of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artistic expression in Australia.
Established by KWM in 2018, the inaugural showcase took place in Sydney, followed by the second one in Melbourne in 2020/21.
Currently in its third edition, the event will be held in Brisbane in collaboration with Griffith University Art Museum for the first time.
The exhibition will feature 28 finalist pieces from various parts of Australia, including remote, regional, and urban areas.
These artworks vividly illustrate the remarkable influence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists on Australian culture.
Griffith University Art Museum (GUAM) Director Angela Goddard said: "It is an honour to host the third King & Wood Mallesons First Nations Art Award at Griffith University Art Museum and share with the public a diverse selection of works by leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists."
The judging panel is comprised of Indigenous people from diverse fields.
These include well-known First Nations journalist, writer, documentary maker, broadcaster, and sound artist, Daniel Browning; writer, project manager, and consultant, Emma Loban; Curator Indigenous Australian Art at QAGOMA, Katina Davidson; as well as artist, researcher, curator, and cultural scholar, Warraba Weatherall.
"Awards such as these provide important opportunities and platforms for First Nations artists to share their work, reach new audiences, gain valuable exposure and have their voices heard," Judge, Emma Loben said.
"I am hoping there will be a broad range of entries by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from across the country to showcase and celebrate the incredible richness and diversity of our communities, cultures and practices."
The Exhibition Patron, Djon Mundine OAM, holds an impressive record as a curator, writer, artist, and activist.
The recipients of the significant King & Wood Mallesons First Nations Art Award ($25,000), the QLD Local Artist Award ($5,000), and two People's Choice Awards ($1,000 each) will be announced on September 14.
An open and free celebration, featuring artist discussions, is scheduled for Saturday, September 16, from 2 to 4 pm.
