Torres Strait Islander artist and carver Anson Dorante has delivered his first interactive Kulap/Gorr Making workshop at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre.

Supported by the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA), the public program gave community members and visitors an opportunity to learn how Kulap/Gorr are made and understand their significance in Torres Strait Islander culture.

Kulap/Gorr are traditional dance equipment used during dances and ceremonies, with the workshop forming part of the cultural centre's program supporting the continuation and sharing of cultural practices.

Mr Dorante has cultural connections to the Meriam and Kulkagal Nations of Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait) and used the workshop to share his skills and cultural knowledge with participants.

He was joined by his daughter and granddaughter, allowing three generations of the family to share their knowledge with the community.

Mr Dorante described the opportunity to pass that knowledge on as a privilege.

"It was a privilege to share the stage with my daughter and granddaughter and showcase our family knowledge of Kulap/Gorr to the community and yumi next generations," he said.

"I look forward to future workshops to share and pass this knowledge down."

The workshop attracted community members and visitors and provided an opportunity for participants to engage directly with a local artist while learning about Torres Strait Islander cultural practices.

TSRA Chairperson George Nona said Kulap/Gorr continued to play an important role in Torres Strait Islander culture.

"Kulap/Gorr is important to our culture. It is traditional dancing equipment that we use during dance and ceremonies, and it helps us carry our culture and traditions forward," Mr Nona said.

"They are also an opportunity for our people to interact with each other, share knowledge and educate the wider community about our rich cultural heritage.

"I eso (thank) Mr Dorante for sharing his art and being part of TSRA's Gab Titui Cultural Centre Public Programs."

The workshop was delivered through Gab Titui Cultural Centre's Public Programs schedule, which supports Torres Strait Islander cultural practices and provides opportunities for knowledge to be shared across generations.
