Papua New Guinea Defence Force personnel say the Australian International Airshow has played a key role in advancing their aviation capability.

Lieutenant Colonel Miro said progress followed the 2017 Airshow, where a plan was initiated to rebuild PNG's air capability.

"Since the memorandum of understanding between RAAF and the PNGDF was signed, our element has gone from strength to strength," Lieutenant Colonel Miro said.

"Since receiving the two PAC-750XL aircraft from the RAAF, we have been able to work closely with RAAF personnel to develop this capability in terms of training our maintainers, ground crew and air crew."

The Papua New Guinea Defence Force has joined the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, the Royal New Zealand Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force at the biennial airshow in Avalon.

It marks the first time the Republic of Fiji Military Forces has participated in the event.

Personnel from across the South-West Pacific have supported air mobility and maintenance for the C-27J Spartan, with the RNZAF also displaying its own C-27 aircraft.

The collaboration is part of the Defence Pacific Air Program, aimed at strengthening regional aviation partnerships and integration.

Director General of the Australian International Airshow, Air Commodore Scott Winchester, said the event highlights the strength of Pacific Defence Force cooperation.

"It provides an opportunity to continue to develop those close working relationships between our nations that have been bonded over many, many decades," he said.

"It's a wonderful opportunity to showcase to industry, foreign military and the Australian public how our nations collaboratively work day in, day out to provide a safe and secure environment," Air Commodore Winchester said.
