On Wednesday, multi-talented Filipino, Murrawarri, and Ngemba artist DOBBY unveiled his latest single and video, "Ancestor," released through ABC Music.
This track is a preview of his debut album, WARRANGU: River Story, set to launch on June 14, 2024.
DOBBY's latest offering, Ancestor, masterfully weaves storytelling through cinematic strings and a compelling instrumental.
Delving into introspection, DOBBY invokes a connection with his ancestors, echoing the mantra "show us the way" to resonate with cultural strength in these challenging times.
DOBBY says on the track, "Ancestor is my musical reconnection with spirit(s)."
"I look inward to find myself within my mind, body and cultural self, and I call upon the listener to do the same.
"Find yourself, and only then can you truly understand the Country you live on."
The release is complemented by a music video, blending dance, Country landscapes, and community scenes.
In his forthcoming album, WARRANGU: River Story, DOBBY delves into the cultural wisdom encapsulated by the three rivers surrounding the perimeters of Brewarrina—the Bogan River to the South, the Culgoa River to the North, and the Barwon River to the East.
The album refers to issues of over-irrigation and water misappropriation in the region, which has had environmental impacts.
The album has been penned an anthem for the grassroots movement within the community who are against water uses including over-irrigation and rerouting of the Murray-Darling basin.
DOBBY received the prestigious 2022 NIMA Archie Roach Foundation Award, acknowledging his exceptional talent and promise as an emerging Indigenous artist.
His prior track, I Can't Breathe, secured the Best Video accolade at the 2020 FBi SMAC Awards, evolving into an anthem for Australia's Blak Lives Matter movement and finding a purpose in schools to educate students about the challenges faced by marginalised communities.
