Torres Strait Islander Elder Gwen Ketchell has been honoured at the inaugural Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service Awards for Excellence after 40 years of service.

The Thursday Island Operational Services Manager accepted both the TCHHS Values Award and the Chief Executive Award at a ceremony on Monday.

Mrs Ketchell started at Thursday Island Hospital in the early 1980s as a cleaner before advancing to manage the operations team responsible for the kitchen and cleaning services.

The hospital worked with the community in 2023 to introduce cultural items to the menu under her guidance.

Mrs Ketchell expressed gratitude for the recognition and acknowledged her colleagues.

"I want to thank my team who support me every day," she said.

The mother-of-two noted her long tenure and continued dedication to the region.

"I've seen a lot of changes at the hospital but still enjoy coming to work every day and supporting my community," she said.

TCHHS Chief Executive, Rex O'Rourke, said the awards were created to highlight staff contributions within the organisation.

Mr O'Rourke praised the diverse roles performed by employees across the service.

"As a Health Service we are privileged to have an incredible workforce, from our operational staff who keep our facilities safe and functioning, to our doctors, nurses and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers who are committed to providing culturally safe, high-quality care every day," he said.

"I am very proud to honour some of these exceptional staff, and I congratulate all the award recipients."

The Chief Executive highlighted Mrs Ketchell's commitment to service and leadership.

"The winner of our Chief Executive Award, Gwen Ketchell, exemplifies everything that TCHHS stands for," he said.

"She is deeply committed to her communities, delivers impeccable service, and leads with strength, humility and care for her team."
