Queensland Police Service has confirmed detectives are investigating an alleged assault of a 14-year-old Indigenous girl in Mount Sheridan, Cairns.
A QPS spokesperson said detectives from the Child Protection Investigation Unit (CPIU) have obtained a formal statement from the girl and are canvassing the area for CCTV.
"Police take all offences against members of the community seriously and are committed to ensuring those involved are brought to justice," the spokesperson told National Indigenous Times.
"The identity of all those involved have been obtained by police and officers are canvassing the area for any CCTV to assist this investigation.
"Police will fully investigate any complaints of assault and are appealing for any members of the public who witnessed the incident or who may have any vision that could assist the investigation to come forward."
The incident sparked a public outcry after footage circulated showing three men standing over the girl as police placed her in handcuffs.
Social media posts also appeared to show one of the men boasting about the assault.
The employer of one of the men has since issued a statement confirming his termination.
"We wish to make extremely clear that this individual's employment within our business has been terminated with immediate effect," the employer said.
"As a family-operated business, we hold ourselves and our team to the highest standards, and we do not tolerate conduct of this nature as it goes against our values.
"As the matter is now under active investigation by Queensland Police, we will not be making any further comment."
National Indigenous Times will continue to seek updates from Queensland Police Service on the status of those allegedly involved.
