The 2023 Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIA) have released their shortlists, which include a number of Indigenous authors, spanning across four categories.

The shortlisted books for each Indigenous author are: My Dream Time, Ash Barty (HarperCollins Publishers); The Boy from Boomerang Crescent, Eddie Betts (Simon & Schuster Australia); Guardians: Waylah the Koorie Warrior 1, Jordan Gould and Richard Pritchard (Allen & Unwin, Albert Street Books); Ceremony: Welcome to our Country, Adam Goodes and Ellie Laing, illustrated by David Hardy (Allen & Unwin); Koori Princess, Anita Heiss (Magabala Books); and First Nations Food Companion, Damien Coulthard and Rebecca Sullivan (Murdoch Books).

Simon & Schuster chief executive Dan Ruffino told National Indigenous Times they are pleased with the short listing and are happy to see Australia being interested in real Indigenous stories.

"In recent years I think there's been a desire to understand Indigenous Australia better and I think publishing has been at the forefront of making those stories available," he said.

"The success is really brought by Australians wanting to know about their past - different versions to what we were probably taught at schools.

"We are hoping to do a young readers version of Eddie's book for schools. It's not confirmed yet but for Archie Roach we did the young adults version of his memoirs which was a great success also."

Simon & Schuster also have many projects in the pipeline with Indigenous authors including Anita Heiss, Teela Reid, Archie Roach's Estate and Ruby Hunter.

The winners will be announced alongside the winners of the ABIA business awards at a gala dinner in Sydney on Thursday, 25 May. The shortlists for the business awards, including two new categories, will be announced on 9 May.

The winner of last year's ABIA book of the year was Diana Reid's Love & Virtue (Ultimo).
