Lung Foundation Australia is encouraging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to take action now to protect themselves and their loved ones from the flu.
On Monday the Foundation noted that influenza contributes to serious illness, hospitalisation and complications every year; particularly for people with existing respiratory conditions.
For First Nations communities, the impact of flu and other lung illnesses can be significant, making prevention critical, Lung Foundation Australia said.
The organisation is reminding mob that getting the flu shot is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of severe illness and help keep communities strong and connected.
Lung Foundation Australia Chief Nurse and Lung Cancer Program Manager, Nicole Parkinson said people often underestimate how serious the flu can be.
"It's easy to become complacent about how dangerous the flu can be," Ms Parkinson said.
"Getting the flu shot helps to keep you healthy and strong and can protect you and your community from severe illness and hospitalisation.
"If you are pregnant, the flu vaccine will also protect your baby against the flu when it is born.
"Lung Foundation Australia are reminding First Nations people of all ages to get their free flu shot now, so they are better protected by the time cold and flu season ramps up."
Proud Bundjalung woman and registered nurse Trina Scott said protecting mob is about looking after each other.
"Staying well isn't just about you — it's about your family, your Elders, and your community," Ms Scott said.
"Getting your flu shot is one way we can all look out for each other and keep our mob strong through winter."
The flu vaccine is free and recommended for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged six months and over, and is available through GPs, Aboriginal Medical Services and health workers.
Lung Foundation Australia is encouraging people to get vaccinated early, before flu season peaks, to ensure the best possible protection.
The Foundation has launched the Protect Your Mob campaign, highlighting the importance of staying well so people can continue to be there for their families and communities.
With the message "Don't let the flu get in the way," the campaign "focuses on everyday life — from work and family to sport and time with mob — reinforcing that protecting your health helps protect those around you", the Foundation said.
Lung Foundation Australia is urging communities to have a yarn with their GP or health worker about getting their flu shot this winter. More information is available online.
