PALS program grants are making a significant impact on schools and kindergartens across Western Australia, with a wide range of activities being supported by the funding.
From Albany to Exmouth and Fitzroy Crossing, students are engaging in cultural activities that promote understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture supported by $796,000 in grants.
A total of 288 projects were approved to receive funding for a variety of activities such as storytelling, language classes, theater, dance, music, painting, and bush tucker gardening.
By promoting Partnership, Acceptance, Learning, and Sharing, the PALS program aims at fostering positive relationships and cultural exchange between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.
PALS is a program that assists the development of projects in WA schools that aim to advance reconciliation within the local community, with their goal being; Partnership between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people based on trust, mutual respect and understanding; Acceptance of and respect for diversity and valuing Aboriginal perspectives; Learning more about each other, Aboriginal histories, languages and cultures; and how we can build strong partnerships with Aboriginal people; and Sharing a common journey towards healing and reconciliation.
PALS is based on the premise that supporting initiatives to improve the teaching and appreciation of Aboriginal cultures, accomplishments, and past events in educational settings, a more profound insight into the experiences and variety within the Aboriginal community is generated.
The diverse funding categories cater to a wide range of activities, such as arts, community relationships, connecting to country and culture, inclusive environments, history, and language. Schools and kindergartens can find support for initiatives that align with their specific goals and needs.
WA Aboriginal Affairs Minister Dr Tony Buti highlighted the grants in fostering reconciliation and offering a valuable chance for Aboriginal students to witness the appreciation, sharing, and celebration of their culture.
With the next funding round set to open in July 2024, more schools and kindergartens will have the opportunity to access support for cultural and educational activities that promote understanding and respect for Aboriginal culture.
