Aboriginal Housing NT new chief executive, Leeanne Caton, has taken the reins at the important community body.

Ms Caton, who began in the role last week, is passionate about social justice and believes that success in life begins with a home.

AHNT is the peak body for Aboriginal-controlled housing in the Territory.

"I am extremely honoured to be in this role and look forward to working with all stakeholders to achieve positive and sustainable results," she said.

She will have a significant role to play in the Partnership Agreement for Remote Housing and Homelands (the Agreement), which came into effect from 1 July 2024 and will expire on 30 June 2034.

Ms Caton noted that "through this Agreement, the parties commit to working towards restoring the principle of self-determination in Aboriginal communities and across the remote housing system – by working together to transform the way governments provide housing and services to Aboriginal communities, town camps and homelands".

"Aboriginal people will be empowered to lead and participate in key decisions affecting the design, delivery, monitoring, and review of the remote housing system," she said.

"Parties to this Agreement pledge to collaborate and participate in shared decision-making under this agreement, as fully informed and equal partners, that are accountable, representative, and transparent."

Ms Caton has nearly 40 years experience working in Aboriginal Affairs including more than a decade in executive leadership roles.

Also this month, she recently joined the board of the NT Primary Health Network.
