West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson says he is disappointed with the circumstances surrounding the spotlight on recently re-drafted player Isiah Winder but added "we've still got to look after the person".

On Monday the club confirmed Victoria Police were investigating an alleged physical altercation which followed the AFL's Indigenous and Multicultural Players Summit in Geelong.

Speaking at a club press conference on Wednesday Simpson conceded the news came as a let down after the Eagles showed faith in Winder, re-selecting him in last week's rookie draft after delisting him at the end of the 2022 season.

Simpson went on to reiterate the need to allow for some perspective on the matter.

"He's a rookie list player, he's 20 years old and he made a mistake," he said.

"He made his way back onto the list through his work rate (and) his dedication to getting fit.

"I know it's a big deal at the moment, and it is for him but we've just got to try and respect the young man that he is."

Simpson confirmed that Winder was still "still part of the playing group" and welcome to the club and its facilities though would be unable to train with the senior group as the club focuses on their build toward next season.

"He's got a little bit of work to do," Simpson said.

Winder has played seven games with the Eagles since being recruited from Peel Thunder with pick 57 in the 2020 Rookie Draft.
