Dolphins second-rower Felise Kaufusi has been honoured with the inaugural Artie Legacy Medal honouring the late great Arthur Beetson.

In an unlikely upset, the incoming Queensland-based side got the win over the powerhouse Chooks.

The silverware is handed to the best on ground in matches between the Roosters and Dolphins, the clubs best linked with the man who carved out an arguably unmatched legacy in the sport.

Beetson, considered the best forward of the post-war era and an icon of the game, was the first Indigenous man to captain an Australian representative sporting side when he lead the Kangaroos against France in December 1973.

The proud Queenslander and representative star began his career with Redcliffe, from which the Dolphins inclusion in the top competition have been birthed, before heading south for stints with a number of clubs, most notably with Easts.

Beetson would go on to win back-to-back NSWRL premierships with the tri-colours in 1974-75.

What could have proved a romantic return to Redcliffe with a premiership at his original club remained agonisingly out of reach.

Artie went on to coach both sides in the late 1970s and early eighties amongst periods at the helm with Queensland and the national side.

In 1989 he was inducted into the Sports Australia Hall of Fame.

Last week Beetson's son Brad spoke glowingly of the gesture extended by the two clubs.

"(It's a) great honour for the family and a continuation of dad's legacy…so much was formed here at Lang Park," he said.

"It was his dream to one day see Redcliffe and the Roosters play. He had a great affiliation to both clubs and on behalf of the family I'd just like to thank the Dolphins and the Roosters.

"He'd be pretty chuffed to see this come to fruition."

Beetson passed in 2011, aged 66, to great sadness across the rugby league world and beyond.

Famously, on-field-foe turned great friend Tommy Raudonikis was captured distraught in the crowd at a memorial held at Suncorp (Lang Park).

"I'm sure that he'd be looking down, probably playing cards with Tommy (during the Dolphins NRL debut)," Brad Beetson said.

Beginning in 2012 the Arthur Beetson medal has been awarded to the Roosters' Jersey Flegg junior competition player of the year.

Since 2017 an identically named award has been bestowed to players showing outstanding attributes of the man within the sport, first one by fellow-Indigenous-great Johnathan Thurston.
