A Pacific-Australian university alliance has been touted a "milestone" moment for a school hoping to position themselves as leaders in the region.

Solomon Islands National University, in the nation's capital Honiara, has linked with Melbourne University with a new memorandum of understanding.

The agreement is forecast to strengthen not just future collaborations in research, education and professional deployment, but the pacific islands school as an institution.

"This marks a significant milestone for SINU as we continue to position ourselves as a hub for academic excellence in the Pacific," SINU Vice-Chancellor Dr Transform Aqorau said.

"The exchange of knowledge, research collaboration and capacity-building initiatives established through this MoU will contribute immensely to the development of our university and the broader Solomon Islands community.

"We look forward to the opportunities that this engagement will bring for our students, faculty, and the region as a whole."

The agreement comes after a Melbourne University delegation to pacific nations for a range of activities.

Melbourne University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Global, Culture and Engagement, Professor Michael Wesley led the trips, also visiting Samoa and Fiji.

Professor Wesley and Dr Aqorau hosted a seminar; 'Solomon Islands and Australia in the Evolving Global Higher Education Landscape' as part of the third Asia and the Pacific Outlook Series in Honiara.

A new Centre for Linguistics is coming, as discussed at the events, alongside focus on peacebuilding initiatives and environmental studies research development.

"Our sustained engagement in the Pacific affirms our commitment to expanding regional educational opportunities and addressing global challenges through meaningful partnerships like the one we have with Solomon Islands National University," Professor Wesley said.
