Charlie Comben has stuck with the Roos and signed a mammoth extension at the club.

The 25-year-old Gunaikurnai man was due to qualify for free agency next year, but instead put pen to paper on a six-year deal to remain at North until the end 2033.

The 199cm key defender has developed into one of his club's most important players in recent seasons, putting together 66 senior games since his debut in 2021.

Also in recent years, Comben discovered his First Nations heritage on his father's side, tracing family history back to Lake Tyres Aborignal Community in Gippsland.

Comben featured in the AFL Players' Association's Indigenous player map for the first time this year.

It's a massive commitment and plus for North, football talent lead Brady Rawlings said.

"Charlie has shown great resilience and work ethic, and to see him develop into one of our most reliable and impactful key defenders has been incredibly rewarding," he said.

"Charlie has great passion for this club and its direction and has grown into a highly respected figure within our walls.

"His elevation to the leadership group this year reflects the character and standard he sets for our young group, and he will be a fundamental part of the club for long time."

Comben has featured in every game for North this season.
