Rhyan Mansell will challenge his three-match ban for a push which resulted in a concussion for St Kilda player Liam O'Connell at the tribunal on Tuesday night.

On Sunday, Mansell was handed the first sanction delivered by the match review officer for pushing an opponent into an oncoming marking contest.

It's become a highly-discussed issue following a number of instances in the AFL preseason, with the Tigers forward the first to get rubbed out after his actions were deemed rough conduct.

O'Connell fell awkwardly onto the turn and was unable to play on after colliding with an unintentional arm of Richmond's Tom Lynch in the marking contest.

Mansell's push into the oncoming traffic was graded careless conduct, severe impact and high contact by the MRO.

His and similar acts, as well as proposed sanctions against them, have become a contested issue among pundits to start the AFL season.

"Based on previous incidents I don't think that has been an issue, so hopefully our's isn't either," Tigers coach Adem Yze said post-match on Saturday.

"If it is a similar incident, it's pretty hard to change a rule during the season." Yze said.

"If it's deemed inappropriate we'll deal with it."

The AFL are understood to have recently sent out a memo to clubs regarding the danger of players pushing the opposition into marking contests.

St Kilda coach Ross Lyon, who with Yze didn't see the incident live, said the outcome for such acts is in the league's hands.

Mansell is facing a ban from his club's upcoming matches with the Lions, Dockers and Suns ahead of a challenge at the tribunal.

After surprising with a comeback win in round one, the Tigers have fallen to consecutive 10-plus goal defeats.

Richmond's Ben Miller was also issued with a $6,250 fine, 3,750 with an early guilty plea, for rough conduct against Saints forward Lance Collard in the fourth quarter of the match.

Miller's rough conduct was deemed careless, high contact and low impact by the MRO.
