Thanakwith (Aboriginal) and Wagadagam (Torres Strait Islander) man Royston Sagigi-Baira was voted the winner of Australian Idol 2023 on Saturday.

The 24-year-old vocalist from Mapoon, Cape York earned himself $100,000 plus a contract with Sony Music and releases a new single.

Right after being announced the victor, Mr Sagigi-Baira got up to perform his new single 'Invincible'.

The performance started off great but due to a technical hiccup, Mr Sagigi-Baira temporarily stopped singing.

"I was singing and everything was okay, but then I remember looking at the judges and the contestants and they were looking at me all so weird.

"I thought I was doing something wrong so I pulled my in ears (in-ear headphones) out and there was no sound - the audience couldn't hear anything but apparently it was fine on the television.

"So it looked like I forgot the lyrics or something but that was not the case, I wanted to start again but I realised we were live. I'm just happy I was able to recover and end the night with a bang!"

Mr Sagigi-Baira is looking forward to visiting the United States where he will begin work in his new chapter as a recording musician.

"I have some exciting opportunities to go to America and work with industry people. I have so many stories to tell, and things I want to give backto the people."

We asked Mr Sagigi-Baira what advice he has to the young mob out there that may face similar struggles as him growing up.

He told us "shame business is a big thing in our community and I just want to let the kids know it's okay to be different, you don't have to fit the status-quo".

"When people people shame you for it (being different), just don't listen to them, that's what I did," he said.

"Because for a long time I did listen to them and I never wanted to sing because I got bullied for it, but I just kept going despite what the haters would say and look where it got me."
