The date for the next New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council councillor election has been confirmed by the NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty, with Local Aboriginal Land Council members to go to the polls on 24 February next year.
NSWALC chief executive Yuseph Deen said it is "incredibly important" for a community-controlled organisation like NSWALC that advocates for self-determination, that the nine councillors are elected by the Local Aboriginal Land Council membership.
"The NSWALC Council is democratically elected every four years in a process run by the NSW Electoral Commission," Mr Deen said.
He encouraged LALC members or potential members to update their details via their LALC or to contact their LALC to become a member.
"NSWALC continues to grow – we now have 29,000 members and 121 LALCs across the state. We want people taking an active role in their Land Council, especially the next generation to continue the legacy of Land Rights," he said.
Eligible voters elect nine councillors to represent the interests of Local Aboriginal Land Council members in Sydney/Newcastle, Mid North Coast, North Coast, Northern, South Coast, Wiradjuri, Central, North Western and Western regions.
Aboriginal people aged 18 and over who are voting members of a LALC can vote.
Further details on closing of the rolls and nomination dates will be made available by the NSW Aboriginal Land Council soon.
More to come.
