Complications surrounding Bulldog Jamarra Ugle-Hagan have taken a turn with the 23-year-old set for a "leave of absence" away from the club.

In a statement on Tuesday, the club confirmed a "decision has been mutually reached by Jamarra and his family, his management, the Club and the AFL" for the forward to take time away from the Kennel "as he deals with personal issues".

"A management plan has been developed with Jamarra," the statement read.

Speculation has surrounded Ugle-Hagan since he was granted flexible training arrangements during pre-season amid unspecified personal circumstances.

Queries have continued by pundits around his commitment to the club, future in football and possible club switches in the months since.

Footy figures have also criticised Ugle-Hagan for his off-field behaviour, including online posts attending non-football social events.

He has also regularly posted what appears to be updates of his training away from the Bulldogs to his social media.

Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge, teammates and club officials have maintained the club's position of prioritising Ugle-Hagan's personal welfare ahead of his football across recent months.

In March, Beveridge held said he hoped "we'll get him back at some point, but he's got some challenges ahead", before later confirming Ugle-Hagan was not in the frame for selection to play in the side.

Ugle-Hagan has not appeared across the opening seven rounds of the AFL season, and has been a scattered presence at training.

"Jamarra's health and wellbeing remains the absolute priority and he will be given whatever time he needs," Bulldogs executive manager of men's football Sam Power said in Tuesday's club statement.

"We will continue to support Jamarra throughout this period."

The club and Ugle-Hagan's family asked for their privacy to be respected.
