A new children's book by Ngiyampaa and Wiradjuri man Taylor Hampton and his wife Jacinta Daniher is bringing First Nations culture and AFL together through story, sport and identity.

'My Dreamtime Match' is the couple's third picture book, building on the success of their most recent release, 'Our Dance', and continues their focus on creating culturally grounded stories for young readers.

The book follows a young Yorta Yorta boy named Jahleel as he takes part in the Sir Doug Nicholls Round, celebrating the contribution of First Nations culture to AFL while connecting community, family and Country.

Mr Hampton said the idea came from their shared love of football and a desire to explore culture in a contemporary setting.

"The inspiration behind it was both of our love of footy," he said.

"With our first two books, we really focused on traditional culture and celebrating cultural practices, whether it was through painting and showing artifacts and also dancing as well.

"With My Dreamtime Match we wanted to really focus on culture in today's world, and given that AFL is a traditional game of Marngook and AFL was inspired by Marngrook, we really wanted to capture that and show that culture can be celebrated in any aspect."

The story also draws on real people, clubs and community connections, grounding the narrative in lived experience.

"These aren't just made up stories - these are based on real people and real football clubs," Mr Hampton said.

"We want our kids to continue to imagine themselves in there and see the diversity of the different skin colors as well."

The book features the guernsey design originally created by Wollithiga Bangerang woman Aunty Neva Takale, with permission granted for its inclusion in the story.

Mr Hampton said the design became a central part of the narrative.

He also incorporated his own guernsey design from the Beechworth Football Netball Club into the story.

"We saw a Facebook post of Neva's design for the football guernsey and we reached out to her," he said.

"We really liked that design and wanted to see if she'd be keen to allow us to use her image or use that guernsey in the book and create a story based around her grandsons."

The book includes illustrated appearances from AFL greats Michael O'Loughlin and Adam Goodes, after permission was granted to use their likeness.

"To be able to have their endorsement to use them in this book was an absolute dream for me," Mr Hampton said.

Illustrations are by Noongar and Sicilian artist Janelle Burger, who also worked on Our Dance.

"Janelle illustrated our second book, Our Dance, and she was really keen to get involved in this third one," he said.

The book also includes the couple's children, Ella and Arlo, continuing a pattern of embedding their family into each story.

Mr Hampton said the project was shaped by his own experiences growing up without strong cultural representation.

"As a kid I didn't know much about who I was and I didn't really have that sense of pride as a kid as I do now," he said.

"So if I had something like this growing up, it would have really strengthened my identity a hell of a lot."

He said the book aims to broaden how culture is understood and celebrated.

"It's about just seeing how we can celebrate a traditional game in today's society, and I think the Dreamtime match and AFL in general is a great way to celebrate that coming together of community," Mr Hampton said.

Ms Daniher said the story reflects how culture continues to evolve in everyday life.

"A modern representation of how we're celebrating differences," she said.

"Maybe they can incorporate that into different sports and different things at school."

My Dreamtime Match is available now via the Hachette Australia website.
