The Northern Territory government is supporting a range of initiatives and activities to help foster healing and reconciliation, with a series of grants to facilitate further education across the community.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty Chansey Paech said his government was helping to facilitate a shared understanding of the "past actions and events" which have negatively impacted Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people in the NT.

"Truth-telling is central to reconciliation between Aboriginal people and the wider community as it helps to develop a shared understanding of our colonial history and how it continues to impact all of our lives. It is an important step on our Treaty journey," the Eastern Arrernte man said.

The government says the idea of truth-telling is a process of healing relationships between First Nations people and the wider community.

This can include "recognising, validating and building empathy and understanding for the extent of the impact of Australia's colonial history and its ongoing consequences"; as well as redressing past injustices; and recognising the "strength, resilience and ongoing sovereignty of Aboriginal people".

The NT government will offer grants of up to $20,000 per applicant to assist with expenses associated with developing and delivering truth-telling projects, out of a pool of $300,000.

"We want Aboriginal people to share their stories, perspectives, and feelings about Australia's past. We want to hear their truths," Minister Paech said.

"These grants will support healing and reconciliation activities and initiatives right across the Territory, and provide the bedrock for truth-telling so we can all move forward, together."

Some of the example enterprises include the production and distribution of learning resources and materials to allow people to be further educated on the impact of Australia's colonial history on Aboriginal Territorians; activities or initiatives that facilitate Aboriginal Territorians recording or sharing their stories in a safe and supportive way; and memorials, monuments or commemorative events about significant people, places or events.
