The Gomeroi Dhinawans (GD) basketball team is calling for sponsors as they prepare for another major season representing Gamilaroi Country on the national stage.
The team will compete in two major tournaments this year, the 2025 First Nations Championships hosted by Basketball Queensland and the 10th National Indigenous Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, hosted by the National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Basketball Association (NATSIBA).
Gomeroi man and team founder, Jordan Boodle, said the upcoming events build on the history the team made last year.
"Dhinawan' means 'special foot'-'wan' meaning special and 'dhina' meaning foot - but to the western world we call him the emu... the Dhinawan is one of my totems and also my country's totem," he said.
"GD made history in the 2024 First Nations Championships being the first NSW Gomeroi-Kamilaroi team to enter.
"This year, we'll again be taking two men's teams to represent our country, our people and our culture at a national level."
The Tamworth-based not-for-profit is facing high costs to get players, coaches and families to the Gold Coast in December.
"The First Nations Championships are a week before Christmas, which is a lot of money for two teams, families, elders and coaches," Boodle said.
"My main priority for now is accommodation, jerseys and food."
He said accommodation at the Performance Centre alone would cost around $3,000 for three nights with registration fees and team gear adding to the total.
GD was founded to create cultural and sporting opportunities for Aboriginal men while promoting mental health and community pride.
"Players will have a better understanding of Kamilaroi way of life through song, dance, totem and moiety systems, language and story," Boodle said.
"Ultimately, our aim is to boost the growth of Aboriginal sport, culture, mental health and physical health through creating basketball and culture opportunities for men from my country."
Sponsors will receive brand exposure on all team and supporter gear, cultural event attire and social media.
"Your logo will be on all future GD gear, squad announcement photos and any cultural events or activities we attend," Boodle said.
"GD will love your business as a sponsor on our gear to represent Black excellence, men's mental health and Aboriginal sporting pathways."
The team has also shared a short documentary produced by Basketball Queensland, showing last year's First Nations Championships, which featured the Dhinawans' historic debut.
Boodle hopes potential sponsors will take a moment to watch it and see the passion behind the team.
"It would be much appreciated if you could view our social media platforms as it will create basketball opportunities for men from the Gomeroi/Kamilaroi nation," he said.
Those interested in supporting the team can contact Gomeroi Dhinawans via social media or reach out to Jordan Boodle directly on 0401 274 063.
