Sixteen years after pulling on the jumper for the first time, Dane Gagai will return to the Broncos in 2027 after signing a one-year deal in his home state this week.

Gagai, 35, was unable to lock in a contract with Newcastle beyond the current season, instead heading back to his debut club, confirmed by Brisbane on Thursday.

The duel Indigenous and Māori All Star was let go by the Broncos in 2012 and joined the Knights that year for what became a six-season period in Newcastle.

He made his Origin debut with the Maroons during that time, going on to play for his state more than 20 times, and solidifying what would become a 300-plus game career.

The Broncos have celebrated their signing of an "elite outside back" and veteran to act as a mentor.

"The Broncos are very excited to see Dane making a return to Red Hill in 2027," club recruitment and pathways manager Simon Scanlan said.

"His form this season has been outstanding and he has undoubtedly been one of the form centres this year.

"As we continue to develop our young outside backs, having experienced professionals around them is incredibly important. Dane's leadership, professionalism and proven performance at the highest level make him a valuable addition to our club."

Gagai has proved one of Newcastle's favourite sons over his tenure there.

He inked a one-year deal for the current season last July.

In total Gagai made more than 100 appearances in each of his two long stints at the club, having returned there from a four year stint with South Sydney ahead of the 2022 season.

He last ran out for the Maroons in 2024 for his 23rd appearance, has played seven times for the Kangaroos and represented both the Māori and Indigenous All Stars on three occasions.

His father Ray was recruited by the Broncos in 1989 but never featured for a first-grade game.

As early as 2009, his son, now a modern NRL great, was brewing interest in being recruited to Red Hill.

Per reports, rival Sydney clubs and UK Super League clubs had shown interest in Gagai for next year.
