A groundbreaking new psychology textbook centres Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in undergraduate education.

The fourth edition of "Psychology: from Inquiry to Understanding" comes from a collaboration between UWA's Australian Indigenous Psychology Education Project and Pearson Australia.

Executive editor and Bardi woman, Professor Pat Dudgeon AM, led the project. She brings extensive experience from her roles at UWA's School of Indigenous Studies, where she serves as Chief Investigator of Transforming Indigenous Mental Health and Wellbeing and Director of The Centre of Best Practice in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Suicide Prevention.

The editorial team includes Noongar woman Belle Selkirk, a clinical psychologist, and Dr Joanna Alexi as lead and assistant editors. Together, they have enriched the text with Indigenous knowledge, authorship, and cultural perspectives across psychology disciplines.

Psychology: from Inquiry to Understanding

"The new chapter on Indigenous psychology provides essential knowledges all psychologists, psychology educators and psychology students need to know," Ms Selkirk said.

"The Indigenous governance and oversight have created a new era for university psychology textbooks — we encourage everyone in this discipline to read it."

Under Professor Dudgeon's leadership, this marks Australia's first psychology textbook with Indigenous editorial oversight for university students.

"Indigenous knowledges have equal value to western knowledges and psychology education and textbooks must reflect this," Professor Dudgeon said.

"Not only will this textbook support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander psychology students, but it will also enrich all psychology students' learnings in cultural responsiveness."

Psychology: from Inquiry to Understanding, is now available as an eBook and in print via Pearson Australia.
