The Cape York Land Council has congratulated the Australian government and the Referendum Working Group for announcing the proposed constitutional amendment to enshrine the Voice to Parliament.

The Council said the proposed alteration aims to honor the First Peoples of Australia by introducing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

Cape York Land Council noted it was "the primary" Native Title Representative Body in Australia to fully support the Uluru Statement From the Heart back in 2017.

"Our endorsement for both the Voice and complete execution of the Uluru Statement remains steadfast and resolved," said a representative for the CYLC.

Council chairman Richie Ah Mat said: "Congratulations to all involved".

On Thursday Mr Albanese announced the Referendum Working Group had devised the following question to be put to the Australian public in a referendum later this year:

"A proposed law: To alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?"

Furthermore, Australians will be asked to consider that the constitution be amended to include a new chapter titled "Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples".

The details being:

In recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of Australia:

1. There shall be a body, to be called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice;

2. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice may make representations to the Parliament and the Executive Government of the Commonwealth on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples;

3. The Parliament shall, subject to this Constitution, have power to make laws with respect to matters relating to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice, including its composition, functions, powers and procedures.

The phrasing announced on Thursday is not finalised however, and is subject to further changes when it is considered by parliament.
