An online fundraiser has started to aid former Canberra Raiders and Brisbane Broncos footballer Sam Backo's recovery after serious heart surgery.
In late March, the former Queensland and Australia representative - regarded as among the greatest Indigenous players of the 20th century, suffered a massive heart attack just days after recovering from knee surgery.
The 62-year-old was place into a 12-day induced coma and had three stents inserted to stabilise his health.
Backo was later scheduled for a triple bypass in Brisbane, though the road ahead is long.
The impact is being felt by his entire family, who are now asking for support.
"Due to the current situation Sam has had no alternatives but to forgo his current employment after using up all his leave entitlements and has been left unemployed," Backo's wife Chrissy wrote.
"The personal care support required also limits my hours of employment.
"Sam's challenges ahead requires long term medication, attend medical appointments, at least 3-6 months therapy/rehabilitation, recommended physiotherapy equipment, relevant family support if necessary for travel and accommodation."
It's uncomfortable territory for the rugby-league champion.
Ms Warren-Backo said her husband "is a very proud and independent man" who's rarely asked for a hand.
A goal has been set under the gruelling circumstance to help his journey back to health.
Backo has been a passionate advocate for Indigenous Australians through his life.
