A Sydney Council is inviting expressions of interest from local Traditional Custodians and Indigenous communities to help provide advice, recommendations and raise concerns as members of their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee.
Georges River Council, covering the St George region south of the city's CBD, is set to appoint its committee for a two year term, starting January 2026.
Open to Bidjigal Traditional Custodians, local First Nations residents and workers, youth, and Elder representatives, the committee is set to appoint six to 12 voting members, alongside non-voting Council members, per the Council's terms of reference.
The committee is tasked with objectives to: highlight local cultural protocols that should be adhered to when developing and implementing Council initiatives; provide guidance to Council on concerns from the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, strategic matters and opportuniuies; advance reconciliation and positive outcome efforts and awareness of Indigenous culture, heritage and history in the local community; among other objectives.
Membership is limited to two two-year terms.
Council is responsible for acting on advice given by the committee, where possible, and maintain a line of communication on matters raised, among other requirements.
"We are proud to work alongside our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to build a future that respects cultural protocols, values diversity, and celebrates the oldest living cultures on earth," Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said.
"The Advisory Committee is a powerful platform for community members to share their knowledge, raise issues, and help shape Council's work in meaningful ways. I encourage all eligible community members to apply."
St Georges River LGA formed from a merger of Hurstville Kogarah City Councils nearly a decade ago.
It covers suburbs such as Hurstville, Kogarah, Peakhurst, and Oatley from lining the area west of Bayside along the Georges River, separating inner Sydney from Sutherland.
"The Advisory Committee plays a vital role in strengthening relationships between Council and the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community," Georges River Council said in a release on Tuesday.
"It provides culturally informed advice on Council policies, plans and projects, and ensures that the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are heard in decision-making processes that affect their community."
Expressions of interest are open until Thursday, November 13.
