Barry Cable will be stripped of his "legend" status and expelled from the Australian Football Hall of Fame after being found by a judge to have sexually abused a young girl over a number of years.

The Herald Sun has reported the measures will be taken regarding the former Perth, East Perth and North Melbourne player soon, with the Australian Football Hall of Fame dinner scheduled for next Tuesday and the AFL Commission due to convene before the event to discuss issues including Cable's eligibility.

The Herald Sun reports Cable has been urged to resign from the Hall.

Calls for Cable to be stripped of the honours came from the lawyer of the woman who initiated civil proceedings against the former player and coach, in addition to a number of football and media figures. Four other women came forward during the case to testify that Cable had abused them.

On Friday District Court Judge Mark Herron found Cable groomed and persistently sexually abused the woman from the age of 12 onwards and ordered him to pay damages of $818,700.

The ruling came some 25 years after the woman reported the matter to police, and after nearly five years of litigation. Cable denied the allegations and refused to attend the civil proceedings.

The judge also said he believed the four other women who came forward, describing one as providing "particularly compelling" testimony.

On the same day as the ruling, the AFL Commission approved a rule change to allow the Australian football Hall of Fame membership to be suspended or revoked under certain conditions.

The change to the Hall of Fame Charter comes into effect on 27 June.
