Parliamentarians have four weeks to decide what information the Australian Electoral Commission will send to households around the country ahead of the Voice referendum.

11:59pm July 17 has been set as the deadline for submissions from the Yes and No camps to be submitted to the AEC after the Constitution Alteration Bill passed through the Senate on Monday.

The 52-19 vote in support of the bill confirms the referendum will take place no later than December 19 - six months on from Monday's decision.

The AEC must provide the pamphlets to households no later than 14 days out from the confirmed date of voting, and prior to the early voting options opening. Over 12 million copies are set to be printed.

The case on either side is capped at 2,000 words, including the proposed addition to the constitution - i.e an enshrined Voice to Parliament.

Australian Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers said the AEC's role is "effectively to act as a post box", with Yes and No cases distributed in the exact words provided to them by the politicians.

"It's now the job of Members and Senators to draft Yes and No cases for us to distribute to each household," he said.

"While we're legally required to provide this pamphlet, our role is otherwise about the process of delivering the referendum and is not about the topic - we don't care which way you vote, only that you do vote."

"The AEC has no editorial role in the content of the Yes and No cases. We will reproduce everything that is provided to us verbatim – so we do encourage both case committees to be precise and careful about their language and grammar."

Despite the strict word limit, each pamphlet is expected to be around 20 pages long and significantly shorter than Australia's last referendum republic which included two questions - on whether to shift to republic, and whether to include a preamble in the constitution, and the constitution in full.

The AEC has earmarked delivering the pamphlets in 34 languages, including First Nations languages, and accessible online formats.

National Indigenous Times has contacted Yes 23 and Fair Australia, the No group fronted by shadow minister for Indigenous Australians Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, for comment.
