Kysaiah Pickett and Lance Franklin are the first players to be handed bans by the AFL's match review office in 2023 for their pair of 'careless' knocks on Saturday night.

The Melbourne livewire will miss two games after a brutal collision with Bulldog Bailey Smith, while Buddy will sit out the second round of his 18th season for connecting with Gold Coast defender Sam Collins in a far more innocuous incident.

The 36-year-old Franklin collided high with Collins in the Swans' forward fifty early in the last quarter while chasing a ground ball.

While it didn't stop play, or elicit a response from Fox Footy's commentary, the MRO deemed Franklins' bump to be careless conduct, of medium impact and high contact and will see him miss Sydney's first home game of the season against his former side Hawthorn in round two.

Buddy himself missed a set-shot from a free-kick he received just moments later and failed to add to his two first-quarter goals in the Swans' 49-point win.

Pickett's second-quarter discretion looked far more of a guarantee to result in serious sanction.

Mid-way through the second term of Melbourne's 50-point win over the Western Bulldogs, Kozzie came flying hard into an unbalanced Smith who had just gotten his kick away.

The bump between the two garnered a big response from the MCG crowd and on-field players.

A handful of Dogs went in to remonstrate following the blow which was also found by the MRO to be careless conduct and high contact with the added degree of high impact resulting in the two-week result.

It soured what was a starring night for the 21-year-old who kicked four goals and laid eight tackles.
