A free-entry basketball tournament celebrating culture, sport and community will be held at Brisbane's Rowland Cowan Stadium as part of this year's NAIDOC Week activities.
Hosted by Brian Kerle Basketball, the NAIDOC 3x3 Tournament, set to be held on Saturday 12 July from 8am to 5pm, welcomes boys and girls across four divisions: U12 (2013–2015), U15 (2010–2012), U18 (2007–2009) and U21 (2004–2006). All cultures are encouraged to participate.
Founded by two-time Olympian and NBL Hall of Fame coach Brian Kerle, the organisation has a long-standing focus on youth development and inclusion.
Kerle coached the Brisbane Bullets to two NBL championships and has been involved in basketball for more than five decades.
The event is designed to connect young people to culture through sport and provide a family-friendly environment.
In addition to the 3x3 tournament, the day will also feature cultural performances, Indigenous art, market stalls, food, games and prizes.
Torres Strait Islander man of Badu Island and current NBL1 player, Tumari Wigness will be one of several Indigenous mentors in attendance, offering support and encouragement to young players.
Organisers say mentor involvement is key to inspiring youth and strengthening cultural pride through participation and connection.
Registrations are free and must be completed online by 1 July.
Team slots are limited, so early sign-up is encouraged.
The event is supported by Carina Leagues Club, the Queensland Government, Basketball Queensland and Fit Education.
