First Nations people will continue providing safety patrols in Mparntwe/Alice Springs and surrounding remote communities after federal funding was announced to support the community-led initiative.
The investment sees $2.5 million to improve community safety in Central Australia by supporting programs including Alice Springs' Lhere Artepe and Tangentyere Night Patrol services.
Federal Minister for Indigenous Australians, Senator Malarndirri McCarthy joined a night patrol service this week to gain a first-hand experience of the work being carried out by patrollers.
The Garrwa and Yanyuwa minister said the government believes First Nations people are best placed to lead the delivery of services and support that help keep their families and children safe.
"Community-led safety patrols are making a positive difference in Central Australia and this latest funding will ensure these vital services continue," Senator McCarthy said.
The Central Australian patrols employ First Nations people who provide assistance and safe transportation for residents of both Alice Springs and remote communities, whilst providing assistance via referrals to youth services and alcohol and drug support where appropriate.
Federal Member for Lingiari, Marion Scrymgour, said funding for Central Australian night patrol services demonstrates the Federal Government's commitment to community-led initiatives
"Community Safety Patrols are effective in reducing alcohol-related harm and the number of police lockups," Ms Scrymgour said.
"Operating in tandem with police, Community Safety Patrols run by Aboriginal people help de-escalate conflicts, remove people from harm and improve community safety."
Funds supporting the program form part of the Federal Government's 2023-24 commitment to strengthen community safety through a $9.16 million investment under the $250 million A Better, Safer Future for Central Australia plan.
The funding boost will ensure night patrol capacity is increased during busy periods in Alice Springs and surrounding communities, such as the summer school holidays period.
The federal government says it is committed to working with the Northern Territory government and Aboriginal Community-Controlled organisations to support service delivery, identified in collaboration with NT Police and other local agencies and services.
