Patty Mills has rocketed back to form in his last outing ahead of a fifth Olympic campaign, steering the Boomers to an 11-point win over Serbia with 28 points in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
In their final preparation match ahead of Paris, Australia rallied in the second half to turn a one point halftime deficit around and down the FIBA men's world no.4, led by three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, 84-73.
Mills responded after a disappointing night against the Americans to make a major statement against Serbia amid question marks around his best-suited role in the side and calls by Andrew Bogut for increased time on the bench following Tuesday's loss.
The Boomers had also produced a huge fourth quarter to push USA all the way in a 98-92 loss the previous night.
The former NBA champ with the Spurs hit two-from-eight field goals and was equally wayward from range against the USA, but shifted his output in the right direction posting important threes and more accuracy shooting overall 24 hours later.
Australia coach Brian Goorjian is confident of Mills playing a key piece in their side's ambition's in Paris, starting against Spain July 27.
"He came into this thing physically in the best shape I've seen him, with the motivation to play well and for us to medal," Goorjian said, as reported by AAP.
"I just know the more he plays (the better he'll get), because he's been through a year where he hasn't played a lot, so he needs reps and he needs games.
"But you can see tonight he's an important piece for us and he's highly motivated."
Speaking post-match, Mills said the team played to their strengths and "can learn a lot of things" from the win against Serbia.
"Tonight was a good bounce-back from last night. We kept plugging away, grinding it out. Defensively, we were much better solid and offensively, I think we played into our strengths," he said, via Basketball Australia media.
"I think the thing that's always hard to do in such a short period of time is find ways to win basketball games. And at the end of the day, Xs and Os can go out the window, but if you've got a group of guys that know how to win, that can get you over the hump.
"So proud of the boys tonight and everyone that stepped out onto the floor. We've just got to keep the guys together, and it's a great ,connected group."
Australia (FIBA men's ranked world no.5) play world no.2 Spain, no.7 Canada and no.14 Greece in their group games at the Olympic Games between July 27-August 2.
