Alex Winwood remains undefeated after unanimous decision against world #5 Reyneris Gutierrez

Joseph Guenzler -

Noongar boxing star and Olympian Alex Winwood won his third professional bout - against the world #5 Reyneris Gutierrez - by unanimous decision at Thunderdome 42 held in Metro City, Perth.

Winwood fought in the weight class below his usual Flyweight, bringing home another belt for the WBC International Strawweight title.

Stepping into the fight, Winwood was ranked #13 though his aspirations are clear; to become the fastest to world champion in Australia's history.

Boxing legend Jeff Fenech currently holds the record at seven bouts.

The fight was on as soon as the bell sounded with both fighters getting into the action swiftly. Gutierrez showed his experience and strong chin during the early rounds but everything changed in the fourth, where Winwood connected on a counter-left hook, dropping Gutierrez to the canvas.

Valiantly, Gutierrez made it the full distance keeping the fight close in score but Winwood's stiff jabs and excellent head and body movement proved too much for the visitor from Nicaragua.

The judges official scores were 96-93 and 97-92 twice, all in favour of Winwood.

"I didn't do anything stupid, I just stuck to the game plan and it f***ing worked," Winwood said after claiming his victory.

In an emotional post-fight interview, Winwood gave many thanks to the team around him, his family and the support of Perth city.

Winwood's well-deserved win will place him in the WBC's top five, edging him closer to the world title currently held by Thailand's tough Petchmanee CP Freshmart 39-1 (23), who hasn't lost a bout in almost six years.
