Broncos half Ezra Mam has pleaded guilty to charges and been fined in relation to an October crash while driving unlicensed and with illicit drugs in his system, per reports.
Speaking to media outside Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday, Mam promised to "work on being a better person" and said he was "truly sorry" to those involved.
Mam failed a roadside test, testing positive for cocaine, had a head-on collision with an Uber on October 18, which resulted in injuries to passengers, including a four-year-old girl.
The 22-year-old footballer failed a roadside drug test with police, and a second later in hospital.
He was later charged by police and also entered a rehabilitation centre for a four-week period.
According to reports, Mam was fined $850 and had his licence disqualified for six months but avoided a conviction.
Via News Corp, the magistrate said Mam was aware his actions were "stupid" and was lucky to avoid a more devastating outcome while driving with "a cocktail of cocaine and other matters that were found in your blood on this occasion".
"At so many levels you are fortunate to stand where you are today…you could have been injured or killed, or the other persons could have been injured or killed," the magistrate reportedly said, also telling Mam "You've got to learn from this".
Speaking outside the court, Mam said "today is a very important step in owning my actions and starting to make things right."
"To the people involved in the accident I am truly sorry. This incident is not a reflection of who I want to be and what is expected of me as a role model," he said.
"I promise to work on being a better person".
He also apologised to the NRL, Broncos, fans and his family.
