Clarence CJ McCarthy-Grogan, the son of Federal Minister for Indigenous Australians, Malarndirri McCarthy, is set to run for Darwin Council's Chan Ward at this month's Northern Territory local government election.

Mr McCarthy-Grogan said he respects his mother is well known howeer is motivated by his own wish to serve the community.

"My parents have definitely been a big influence on me, but at the same time this is something that I'm proud to do myself," he said.

The Yanyuwa, Garrawa and Kuku Yalanji man said his family's backing matters and that his decision is grounded in a commitment to Darwin.

"I wouldn't be here without the love and support of my family, but I also love this community and want to give back," he said.

"I'm a Darwin local, I was born here and grew up here, I love this city."

Torres Strait Islander and basketball legend Nate Jawai expressed support for Mr McCarthy-Grogan's community focus and consistency.

"What I love about CJ is he never forgets where he came from, and he never stops backing in the next generation," he said.

"Wether it's on the court, in the classroom or out in the community, he shows up.

"That's the kind of leadership we need."

Mr McCarthy-Grogan said he will push for a more accessible city and more inclusive events.

"Being born with a physical disability, I want people to feel accepted no matter their background," he said.

"I want Darwin to be more accessible for day to day life, so I'll fight for more accessible sidewalks, better disabled parking, more accessible public spaces.

"I also want to try to create more events that celebrate everyone's differences – Diwali, fishing comps, sporting events, festivals – there's a lot more that brings us together than divides us, and that's what I'm all about."

Ms McCarthy backed her son's bid.

"So, so, so proud of CJ for putting his hand up for local council," she said, via Facebook.

"He's represented the country in basketball and has been such a strong advocate for disability rights and access.

"I know he'll do great things on Darwin City Council."

The Northern Territory's 2025 Local Government Elections will be held on Saturday 23 August.
