The late Rev Dr D. Gondarra OAM, a respected advocate for Indigenous justice who passed away last month, will be honoured with a state funeral.

A respected lawman of the Dhurili clan in north-east Arnhem Land and a prominent Aboriginal leader, Dr Gondarra was a strong advocate for his Yolŋu culture and language.

He tirelessly worked towards the recognition of his people's sacred Yolŋu Rom (law), founding the Mawul Rom project to engage in dialogue and educate non-Indigenous individuals.

A dynamic individual within both Yolŋu society and mainstream Australia, Dr Gondarra was a co-founder of the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress and the first Aboriginal Moderator of the Uniting Church in northern Australia.

He played a significant role in shaping Aboriginal Christian theology and was the first Indigenous person to sit on the World Council of Churches.

Dr Gondarra actively supported the reconciliation movement, serving as a member of The Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation, the predecessor of Reconciliation Australia.

In a statement about his passing, the Arnhem Land Progress Aboriginal Corporation said Dr Gondarra dedicated his life selflessly to the service of his people and to advancing the cause of First Nations people from across the nation and the world.

"His leadership and commitment to improve the social and economic well- being of first nations people was immeasurable," ALPAC said.

"His legacy will forever remain in the hearts and minds of everyone that he engaged with and motivates us to continue the important work he started."

Dr Gondarra is survived by his eldest sister Rose, his children, and grandchildren.

Northern Territory chief minister, Eva Lawler said Dr Gondarra's legacy will be remembered by future generations.

"Rev Dr Gondarra OAM was a fierce advocate for reconciliation – and a process to improve the lives of Aboriginal people in the Territory," Ms Lawler said.

"Achieving a huge amount during his life, Rev Dr Gondarra OAM legacy will last and be honoured by many generations. I pay my utmost respect to a true Territory legend, and pay condolences to his family and community."

The commemoration is scheduled to be held at the Nungalinya College, 72 Dripstone Road, Nakara on Thursday, 29 August at 11:30 am.
